The Definitive Guide to Morning Skincare Layering Order

Sarah Okonkwo, Aesthetic Nurse·July 12, 2025·5 min read

The Core Principle

Skincare layering is governed by two principles:

1. Thinnest to thickest — water-based serums before oils before creams before SPF 2. pH-dependent actives first — vitamin C and AHAs need to be applied before products that would neutralise their low-pH environment

The Morning Sequence

Step 1: Cleanser Gel or foam if oily/combination. Cream or oil if dry or sensitive. Never a hot rinse — warm water only.

Step 2: Toner (optional) Hydrating toners go here. If you use an exfoliating toner (AHA/BHA), apply it before serums and wait 30 seconds before continuing.

Step 3: Vitamin C Serum Ascorbic acid works best at pH 2.5–3.5. Apply to clean, damp skin. Wait 60–90 seconds before layering other products to allow some absorption.

Step 4: Treatment Serums Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptide serums — in order of watery to slightly thicker texture.

Step 5: Eye Cream Apply before heavier moisturisers if

thinner in texture. Pat, don't rub.

Step 6: Moisturiser Seals in previous steps. Choose based on your skin type: gel for oily, lotion for combination, cream for dry.

Step 7: Face Oil (if using) Oils go on top of water-based products, before SPF.

Step 8: SPF — Non-negotiable Apply last. Mineral SPF slightly before going out. Chemical SPF 15–20 minutes before sun exposure.

Pro Tip: The "60-second rule" — wait a full minute between actives to let pH stabilise and absorption begin. It sounds tedious. It makes a measurable difference.

What Can Be Combined

Many steps can be combined if a single product contains multiple actives. A moisturiser with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid eliminates two steps. An SPF with antioxidants can replace the vitamin C serum for some skin types.

Simpler is often better. Five effective products applied correctly outperform ten mediocre ones.
